Michael offers an outpatient chronic pain management service based in Ballarat, Victoria.
Michael provides outpatient services for private patients, Workcover and TAC.
Referrals to Michael can be made by your General Practitioner, Surgeon or Physician.
Your first consultation with Michael will involve a detailed medical and pain history, and examination. Michael will discuss with you the impact of pain on your life as well as other factors that may be affecting your pain, such as sleep and lifestyle.
From the initial consultation, a treatment plan will be formulated which may include advice regarding sleep, diet, medication, the role of interventions, exercise (e.g. yoga, pilates, physiotherapy) and pain programs.
Michael offers follow-up appointments to monitor your treatment and progress.
acute pain service
During your stay as an inpatient, your surgeon or physician may refer you to Michael if you are experiencing pain that is difficult to control. Following receipt of the referral, Michael will firstly review your current pain medicine regime, then tailor an analgesic regime to suit your requirements. Michael will then regularly review your progress until your discharge from hospital and arrange follow-up at his rooms if required.
chronic pain service
As a part of your chronic pain management plan, Michael may recommend admission for a five day inpatient stay for a ketamine or lignocaine infusion at St John of God Hospital, Ballarat.
The goals of these are infusions are individualised for each patient but are generally used as a tool to:
Provide pain control and function for an extended period of time to facilitate further active reconditioning for conditions such as:
Chronic back pain
To treat opioid induced hyperalgesia
Titration of other analgesic medications
Michael will see you at least 3 times during your stay at St John of God Hospital to assess your progress and to answer any questions you should have regarding your treatment plan.
During your stay you will also be assessed by members of the St John of God multidisciplinary allied health team, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and exercise physiology. You will have the opportunity to attend education sessions and the hospital gym.
Following your discharge Michael will facilitate a referral for further reconditioning program as an outpatient to maximise the benefits gained from the infusion(s).
Michael strongly believes in the benefit of carefully chosen interventional pain procedures as one component of a holistic, multimodal strategy for the management of your chronic pain.
Prior to undergoing any procedure, Michael will carefully assess your suitability for the procedure as well as the likelihood of achieving significant pain relief.

Interventional pain procedures that Michael performs in theatre are varied, but typically involve targed administration of anaesthetic agents and steroids to specific nerves as well as electricial modulation of nerves (radiofrequency denervation and neuromodulation).
